Toledo is preparing to commemorate one of the most significant milestones in its history: the 800th anniversary of its Primatial Cathedral. Against this backdrop, La Paloma Cerámicas has unveiled a replica of the foundation stone of Toledo Cathedral, the official commemorative piece for the anniversary, produced in a special edition of 11,000 units.
On 14 August 1226, under the impetus of King Ferdinand III the Saint and Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, the first ashlar was laid for what is today one of Europe’s great architectural and spiritual treasures. Exactly eight hundred years later, that foundation stone is once again taking centre stage thanks to La Paloma Cerámicas, an official partner of the 8th Centenary, which has taken on the challenge of translating that legacy into a tangible form accessible to thousands of people.

A bridge between the past and the present
The replica is not merely a decorative object. It is a piece of profound symbolic value that recreates the foundation stone, drawing on the historical depiction by the painter Francisco Rizi in his work The Laying of the Foundation Stone of Toledo Cathedral.
During the launch event, Francisco Antonio Rodríguez Moreno, CEO of La Paloma Cerámicas, explained the vision behind the project: to transform a historical artefact into a relatable and accessible symbol. The aim, in his own words, is for anyone who receives one of these bricks to feel that they are holding a small part of that history in their hands. The company’s technical expertise makes it possible for the origins of Spain’s Primatial Cathedral to reach thousands of citizens directly.

The value of permanence
The Dean of the Cathedral, Juan Pedro Sánchez Gamero, described the replica as an emblem of the centenary that looks back with gratitude to its origins. The Cathedral’s chief stonemason, Francisco Javier Hernández de Pinto, recalled that the stones of a cathedral are not merely material, but history made visible, and highlighted the commitment of those who, like La Paloma Cerámicas, work to showcase this heritage.
The Archbishop of Toledo, Monsignor Francisco Cerro Chaves, brought the ceremony to a close by expressing his hope that this commemorative piece would serve as a symbol of faith and hope for future generations.

14 August: a date with history
The replicas will be distributed on 14 August, marking exactly eight centuries since the original stone was laid. All those attending the liturgical celebration on the final day of the Octave of Our Lady of the Tabernacle will receive this gift produced by La Paloma Cerámicas, taking home with them a fragment of the spirit that began to take shape eight centuries ago and which remains as vibrant as ever today.
Through this initiative, La Paloma Cerámicas reaffirms its commitment to culture and heritage, linking its name to the history of Toledo Cathedral in a celebration that will remain etched in the city’s memory.
